We have been a proud partner of the Marakissa kindergarten in The Gambia since 2004 and accompany the project on its path of continuous development. In 2024, important progress was once again made, noticeably improving the lives of the children and their environment.
One important step was the installation of a new roof, which now better protects the kindergarten from the challenges of wind and weather. But it was not just the building infrastructure that was strengthened; there was also a sustainable improvement in terms of energy supply: the new solar panels now guarantee a reliable and environmentally friendly source of electricity.
Healthcare for children and their families is also particularly important. At the Clinic Day, numerous mothers and their babies were welcomed for check-ups and vaccinations, while pregnant women were able to attend their regular check-ups.
Another highlight was set in the field of dentistry: Young dentistry students from the University of Münster looked after the kindergarten children, treating them on site and giving important tips on dental hygiene. Each child received a free toothbrush and toothpaste to promote dental health in the long term.
However, not only health, but also environmental awareness was strengthened. In November, the children actively took part in the ‘Keep Your Kindergarten Clean’ initiative. Together with a gardener, they ensured that the kindergarten’s large garden was maintained and learnt through play how important cleanliness and sustainability are for their environment.
This progress is a clear sign of how valuable long-term support can be for education, health and a sustainable future. We are grateful and happy to continue to be part of this important project.
